Collection

To make the island waste free we basically use three methods of collecting.

Clean-ups

The waste problem on Nusa Penida is unfortunately very visible. Many beaches are full of (washed ashore) waste and in many places there is rubbish left behind by tourists, dumped by local businesses or the population. With the help of volunteers and students, we organize or support clean up campaigns in places where this is necessary. In particular, the beaches (where the waste continues to wash up), roadsides and places with a lot of tourism require this approach. These initiatives are also organized by local communities and other organisations like Trash heroes or by dive centres. We collaborate by picking up the gathered waste to be sorted, processed and shipped.

Bank Sampah system

Due to sparsely spread populated and mainly poor infrastructure it's very difficult to realize a door-to-door collection system. Moreover, this is not financially feasible for every household. That is why we have opted for the Bank Sampah or Waste Bank system. This system is already being used successfully on Bali and other islands and means that the population takes their waste to a central collection point. There the waste is sorted and people receive a payment for the recyclable materials. The foundation then collects it and pays the community (Banjar) for collected recyclable waste. The Banjar also receives a margin which is saved up to finance periodic parties and ceremonies.

Pick up Service

In recent years in particular, the island has become extremely popular and tourism has exploded. As an example; 3 years ago there were only a few hotels on the island and many tourists had to rely on quickly established guesthouses. Now there are more than 450 registered hotels and that number is still growing.

A direct pick-up service will be set up for these hotels and other companies in the tourism sector. For a monthly fee, the waste (preferably already sorted) is collected at the doorstep. Since there is no such service available yet and many business owners are just as concerned about the island as we are, there, many are willing to pay for such service, help us with seperating the waste and even sponsor us. Unfortunately, even while tourism is returning to the island, many businesses are still filling the financial gaps caused by the pandemic and without our pick up truck we are not even able to provide such service. We do get help from resorts who deliver their waste to our facility for free to be recycled and shipped.
