With its 50,000 inhabitants, the island is fairly sparsely populated, you will not find busy cities full of scooter traffic or large resorts here. It also breathes with its many temples and colored ceremonies, the atmosphere of Bali. It is therefore affectionately referred to by some as 'Bali as it used to be'.
Unfortunately, due to increased tourism and increased consumption on the island, the waste problem has also increased. The government-funded waste processor can only cover a small portion of the island, and the collected waste ends up on a rapidly expanding landfill.
Furthermore, most villages and hotels do not have access to this service because the number of waste processor vehicles is limited and their size is unsuitable for the poor infrastructure. The result is that a lot of waste is still burned in the open air or worse, dumped in environment or the ocean.
